Deer are the biggest problem we have to successful gardens and landscapes in the Chapel Hill area.  Many homeowners have to give up growing favorite plants because of deer, such as hydrangeas, hostas, azaleas, daylilies, tulips, roses, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and so much more. Over the years I’ve seen my working list of ‘deer resistant’ plants dwindle as the deer pressure grows.

I am also concerned about the ecological impact of deer over-browsing natural areas and residential landscapes. Birds, bees, butterflies, and all other animals depend upon a healthy ecosystem for food and habitat.

When the deer destroy the ground-layer vegetation these animals can no longer sustain healthy populations.

As property owners we can protect our landscape investments, reduce exposure to tick-borne diseases, and support the habitat of important wildlife by installing deer fences to keep deer out of parts of our yards.
To date (September 2009) I have installed over 33,000 feet of deer fencing in dozens of yards, including driveway gates, some with automatic gate operators; from 900 square foot-vegetable gardens to six acre-parcels.
I have developed my own hybrid fencing system using materials and techniques from different manufactures to install reasonably priced, reliable, functional, and aesthetically acceptable deer fences for the suburban residential and rural landscapes.

Perhaps it is time that you consider installing a deer fence and begin to grow those wonderful plants that you gave up having.
